When it comes to being stuck inside, there’s no doubt that pets can make the time at home feel a whole lot more enjoyable.

They’re there when we need to vent or just need a good cuddle, and their care provides a productive outlet that’s beneficial to both pets and people.

1. Stick to Their Routine

In times of disruption, it's understandable to let your pet's routines slip, but Purina behaviorist Dr. Annie Valuska advises against this. She emphasizes the importance of keeping your pet's routine as consistent as possible. This includes sticking to their regular feeding schedule, maintaining their usual potty routine, and ensuring walks occur at their normal times.

Dr. Valuska also highlights the significance of reinforcing good manners in your pet, such as sitting before going through a doorway or avoiding begging for table scraps. By upholding these expectations, you provide a sense of stability and consistency in your pet's daily routine.

2. Be Intentional About Rest Time

It's important to provide your pet with ample rest time during the day, especially if they are accustomed to having alone time when the family is away.

Dr. Francois Martin, a behaviorist from Purina, advises against changing your pet's routine by overwhelming them with excessive socialization. Unlike children, pets do not require constant engagement and activities throughout the day.

As a parent, you can take comfort in knowing that your cat or dog will be perfectly content and even benefit from having some peaceful moments to themselves. So, allow them to enjoy some quiet time and recharge as needed.

3. Let Them Chew It Out

When you have conference calls, homeschooling sessions, or simply need some time to rest, providing your pet with a long-chew treat can be a helpful solution to keep them entertained.

Dr. Sverine Ligout, a behaviorist from Purina, advises being mindful of portion control when giving treats to your pet. While these treats can be enjoyable for them, it's important to avoid overfeeding. Take into account the calorie content of the treats and adjust their regular meal portions accordingly to maintain a balanced diet.

4. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise

Maintaining a sense of calm and channeling nervous energy into productive outlets, such as exercise, is important for both you and your pet during these times.

While you may not be able to visit the dog park, there are still plenty of ways to help your dog release their energy. Even a short walk to the mailbox can provide some exercise. If you're indoors, consider rearranging furniture to create space for a game of fetch or tug of war.

If you have a backyard, take advantage of it and engage in a game of chase or other interactive activities. Incorporating exercise into your pet's daily routine at consistent times can help establish a sense of structure and provide them with both physical and mental stimulation. Additionally, these shared play sessions can strengthen the bond between you and your pet.

5. Play Some Mind Games

Another excellent way to tire out your pet is through mental stimulation, such as teaching them new tricks. This is the perfect opportunity to fulfill your desire of having a dog that can roll over or a cat that can dance.

Dr. Ragen McGowan, a Purina behaviorist, explains that pets also experience the "Eureka Effect," which is the emotional response to problem-solving. Just like humans, when they figure something out, they feel a positive surge of emotions.

You can incorporate mental enrichment into your pet's daily routine by making feeding time more engaging. Instead of simply placing the food in a bowl, scatter it around the house and let them use their sense of smell to find it. Alternatively, you can use puzzle toys to provide them with a mental challenge while they eat. This will keep them mentally stimulated and add an extra layer of fun to their day.
