When we encounter a dog, our brains often generate positive emotions, and we instinctively express our love for them without hesitation. However, it's important to consider how we can effectively show our dogs this affection.
Is Just Loving Your Dog Enough?
When we encounter a dog, our brains often generate positive emotions, and we instinctively express our love for them without hesitation. However, it's important to consider how we can effectively show our dogs this affection.
Communication
Building a successful relationship requires understanding and clear communication. When misunderstandings and confusion arise, we may no longer feel secure in our connections. This applies not only to interactions with our fellow humans but also with our beloved canine companions. It's natural for confusion to occur when we communicate with a different species.
Dogs are highly observant of our actions rather than our words. Every action we take in their presence serves as a lesson for them. It's crucial to demonstrate through our behaviors that we truly comprehend their needs, actively prioritize their safety, and provide a reliable and secure environment for them to rely on.
Training
Training is an effective way to minimize communication confusion with our dogs. By establishing a shared understanding of specific cues, we can ensure that our dogs comprehend what is expected of them.
If your dog isn't responding to commands like "drop it" despite repeated requests, it's possible that they don't fully grasp the instruction. Investing time in teaching them the meaning of those words will lead to a rewarding learning experience for both of you. This will enable you to effectively communicate the cue when needed. Introducing the cue in a high-energy play session, such as when your dog is excitedly play bowing and you're engaging them in an enjoyable game of tug, may not be the most optimal learning situation.
Play
Engaging in play strengthens the bond between humans and dogs – it's backed by science. However, playing in a way that deepens this bond goes beyond simply throwing a ball for your dog. It involves active participation on your part.
Have you ever raced your dog to retrieve the ball? Have you ever shown interest in what they're investigating? While I don't suggest joining them at the base of a lamp post, a simple enthusiastic "what is it?" when they're exploring can bring joy to their day. Playing scent games, running together, interactive tug toys, and brain games can all be enriched by your involvement.
Time
How much quality time do you dedicate to your dog? I'm not referring to the moments when you're both at home or when you're preoccupied with your phone during walks. I'm talking about the time you spend actively engaging and sharing experiences with your dog.
When was the last time you truly explored the outdoors together? When was the last time you sat in peaceful silence, without distractions, simply enjoying each other's company? When was the last time you gave your dog a proper, heartfelt stroke, not just a quick pat on the head as you walk through the door, but a moment of genuine connection?
Carve out the time. Not only will it greatly benefit your dog, but it will also bring immense joy and fulfillment to your own life.
